How do I get my computer to read my dvds from my Sony Handycam?

I have a Sony Handycam and have some old dvds that I would like to combine so that I can edit them on my laptop. I have downloaded HandBrake to rip the dvds, but that program won’t read the discs. Whenever I just try to watch the disc, a little error message pops up telling me "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."
